WAPE saw the need to develop the debriefing ministry to go hand-in-hand with the HWEC workshops. Debriefing refers to conversational sessions that revolve around the sharing and examining of information after a specific event has taken place. It is basically evaluating facts, events and personal reactions and assessing how the individual was affected by the event.
This is particularly important for HWEC facilitators and Church leaders especially pastors who spend most of their time listening to people but have had no opportunity to be listened to.
Therefore, suitable candidates for the Debriefing were selected from the pool of HWEC facilitators.
The team was privileged to have two trainers from Le Rucher Ministries, Geneva. This was a one week rigorous training which incorporated learning how to debrief and at the same time being debriefed. Participants were delighted at the opportunity to tell their stories to each other as they learnt the principles of debriefing and especially the art of active listening and asking reflective questions.
Eventually, everyone had something precious they had learnt and were going home with. We realised debriefing is an important component of ministry; the need to stop, look back and look ahead. It is rejuvenating, refreshing and a worthwhile activity.
